Twenty eyes of fourteen severe dry eye patients used preservative-free artificial tears but suffering from persistent corneal epithelial defect were enrolled in this study. They used autologous serum eyedrops for 2 weeks. We evaluated the results of tear film break-up time, subjective symptom scores and fluorescein staining scores before and 2 weeks after treatment. Before treatment, tear film break-up time, subjective symptom scores and fluorescein staining scores were 4.37¡¾1.27 sec, 3.59¡¾0.81, and 3.51¡¾0.94, espectively. Two weeks after treatment, the respective parameters were 7.61¡¾0.53 sec (p<0.001), 1.87¡¾0.55 (p<0.001), and 3.04¡¾1.05 (p<0.001). All results showed improvement in the patients used autologous serum eyedrops after 2 weeks of treatment. Autologous serum eyedrops were considered as the effective treatment of ocular complications with severe dry eye disease.
